Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 2026
The short version: Motty doesn't collect your name, email, or any personal details. You type a reg plate, we look it up, you get a result. That's it.
Who we are
Motty is a free UK car history checker operated by Motty Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales. You can contact us at hello@askmotty.co.uk.
What data we collect
Motty is designed to collect as little data as possible. Specifically:
- Registration numbers — you enter a vehicle reg plate to use the service. A vehicle registration number is not personal data as it identifies a vehicle, not a person.
- Server logs — like all websites, our hosting provider (Vercel) automatically logs basic technical data including IP addresses, browser type, and the pages you visit. This is standard hosting infrastructure and is not used to identify or track individuals. Logs are retained for a short period and then deleted automatically.
- No cookies — Motty does not use tracking cookies, advertising cookies, or any third-party analytics cookies. We do not use Google Analytics or any similar tracking service.
What we do NOT collect
- Your name, email address, or contact details
- Payment information of any kind
- Your location beyond what is inherent in an IP address
- Any information about the car you are considering buying
- Any account or profile information
How we use data
The registration number you enter is used solely to query official UK government APIs (DVLA and DVSA) and return vehicle information to you. It is not stored, logged, sold, or shared with any third party for any other purpose.
Server log data is used only for the purposes of maintaining the security and performance of the service. It is not linked to any individual user and is not shared.
Third-party services
Motty uses the following third-party services to operate:
- DVLA Vehicle Enquiry API — operated by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (UK Government). Your reg plate is sent to this service to retrieve vehicle data.
- DVSA MOT History API — operated by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (UK Government). Your reg plate is sent to this service to retrieve MOT history.
- Vercel — our hosting provider. Server logs are retained by Vercel as part of standard hosting infrastructure.
- Anthropic — our AI provider, used to generate plain-English verdicts. The vehicle data (not your identity) is sent to Anthropic's API for this purpose.
- Google Fonts — used to load typefaces. Google may log font requests per their standard privacy policy.
Motty does not sell, rent, or share your data with advertisers or marketing companies.
Your rights under UK GDPR
Because Motty collects no personal data beyond server logs, most GDPR rights (access, correction, deletion) are not applicable in practice — there is no profile or account associated with you. If you have questions about data held in server logs, please contact us at hello@askmotty.co.uk and we will respond within 30 days.
Children
Motty is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated date. As we collect minimal data, significant changes are unlikely.
