Terms of Use

Last updated: May 2026
The short version: Motty shows you information from official UK government sources. We are not telling you to buy or not buy anything. The information is provided to help you make your own informed decision — it is not financial, legal, or professional advice.

1. About Motty

Motty is a free vehicle history information service operated by Motty Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales. Motty retrieves data from official UK government sources — specifically the DVLA Vehicle Enquiry Service and the DVSA MOT History API — and presents it in a clear, accessible format alongside an AI-generated summary.

By using Motty, you agree to these Terms of Use.

2. What Motty is — and isn't

Motty is an information tool. It presents data from third-party sources and generates summaries based on that data. It is not:

The scores, verdicts, flags, and plain-English summaries generated by Motty represent an automated analysis of the data available to us. They are intended to inform, not to instruct. Any decision to purchase a vehicle remains entirely yours.

Important: Motty's verdicts and scores are not professional recommendations. Do not rely on Motty alone as the basis for a significant financial decision. We recommend combining Motty's free check with a physical inspection and, for high-value vehicles, a full commercial vehicle history check from a provider such as HPI.

3. Data sources and accuracy

The data Motty displays comes from the following official UK government sources:

Motty presents this data as received from these official sources. We do not alter, modify, or filter the underlying data. However, we cannot guarantee that government databases are always complete, up to date, or free from error. The existence of data on these systems depends on whether tests and registrations have been correctly recorded.

Motty's scoring algorithm and AI-generated summaries are our own analytical interpretation of this data. They represent a reasonable and good-faith analysis but are not infallible. A car that scores well may still have issues not visible in the data. A car that scores poorly may be perfectly serviceable.

4. What Motty cannot see

Motty does not have access to the following information, which is held in commercial databases not available via free government APIs:

This is disclosed clearly on every results page. Users who require this information should consult a commercial vehicle history provider such as HPI, Experian AutoCheck, or the AA.

5. Limitation of liability

Motty Ltd provides this service "as is" and makes no warranties, express or implied, about the completeness, accuracy, reliability, or fitness for purpose of the information provided.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Motty Ltd shall not be liable for any loss or damage — including financial loss arising from a vehicle purchase decision — made in reliance on information provided by Motty. This includes but is not limited to:

Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation.

6. Acceptable use

You may use Motty for personal, non-commercial purposes. You may not:

7. Affiliate links

Motty may display links to third-party services such as insurance comparison websites, vehicle finance providers, and vehicle inspection services. Some of these links may be affiliate links, meaning Motty may receive a small commission if you click through and purchase a product or service. This does not affect the price you pay. Affiliate relationships do not influence Motty's verdicts or scores in any way.

8. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. Continued use of Motty after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.

9. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
